The Most Common Dental Emergencies and How to Handle Them

Dental emergencies have a way of happening at the worst possible moments. Whether it’s a toothache that flares up on a weekend or a knocked-out tooth during a hockey game, knowing what to do in those first few minutes can make a real difference in the outcome. At Ellesmere Village Dental, we want every patient in our community to feel prepared, not panicked, when something unexpected happens.

Here’s a look at the most common dental emergencies we see and how to handle them.

Severe Toothache

A toothache that is sharp, throbbing, or persistent is your body’s way of telling you something needs attention. It could point to deep decay, a crack in the tooth, or an infection that has reached the nerve.

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
  • Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, as this can cause tissue irritation
  • Call us as soon as possible

Don’t wait to see if it improves on its own. Dental infections can spread quickly and become more serious if left untreated.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A completely knocked-out tooth is one of the few dental emergencies where acting fast can actually save it. You have roughly 30 to 60 minutes to get to a dentist for the best chance of re-implantation.

What to do:

  • Handle the tooth by the crown only, never the root
  • If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water without scrubbing
  • Try to place it back in the socket if you can, or store it in a small container of milk or saliva
  • Get to our office or an emergency dentist in Scarborough, ON immediately

Every minute counts with a knocked-out tooth.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

A small chip that causes no pain may not need same-day care, but a crack or break that is causing sharp pain, temperature sensitivity, or involves a large portion of the tooth should be seen promptly. Cracks can worsen over time, and early treatment usually means a simpler fix.

What to do:

  • Rinse with warm water
  • Apply a cold compress to your cheek if there is swelling
  • Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth
  • Contact us to get assessed as soon as you can

Lost Filling or Crown

Losing a filling or crown leaves the underlying tooth exposed and vulnerable to sensitivity, pain, and further damage. It might not feel like an emergency, but getting it covered up quickly protects the tooth and keeps the repair straightforward.

What to do:

  • Dental cement from a pharmacy can serve as a temporary patch
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side
  • Book an appointment with us right away so we can properly restore it

Dental Abscess

An abscess is a bacterial infection that forms at the root of a tooth or in the surrounding gum tissue. It can cause severe, throbbing pain, facial swelling, fever, and sometimes a visible pimple-like bump on the gum.

This is a serious situation that should not be ignored. Dental infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and beyond if left untreated.

What to do:

  • Call our office immediately
  • If you have significant facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, or trouble breathing, go to your nearest emergency room right away
  • Rinsing with warm salt water can provide some temporary relief while you seek care

Soft Tissue Injuries

Cuts or tears to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums can bleed quite a bit, which tends to make them feel more alarming than they are. Most minor soft tissue injuries can be managed at home, but deeper lacerations may need attention.

What to do:

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water
  • Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to control bleeding
  • If bleeding does not slow after 15 to 20 minutes, head to an urgent care clinic or emergency room
