Candidates for Dentures

Did you know that approximately one-quarter of adults over 65 are missing all their teeth? Dentures offer a reliable and natural-looking solution for tooth loss, so much so that you may have conversed with someone who wears them without even realizing it. Could you be the next person to benefit from this effective option?

To determine if you’re a suitable candidate for this restorative treatment, consider the following criteria:

  • You wish to replace several or all of your teeth.
  • You do not smoke or use other tobacco products.
  • You have a healthy jawbone (and we can assist you in ensuring this!).
  • You do not experience dry mouth.
  • You’re ready to take proper care of your dentures at home.
  • You’re committed to routine dental exams—just as you would with natural teeth.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Taking care of your dentures involves regular cleaning and dental check-ups. Even if your dentures fit perfectly, it’s important to see your dentist periodically. During your visit, the dentist will not only assess your dentures’ fit but also examine your gums, tongue, jaw, and overall oral health to ensure everything is in good shape. Remember, maintaining your dentures helps protect your oral health, not just your smile.

To care for your dentures at home:

  • Remove dentures overnight.
  • Soak dentures in warm water with or without a denture cleanser.
  • Avoid soaking dentures with metal clasps in anything but warm water.
  • When not wearing dentures, keep them in water to prevent drying out and warping.
  • Do not soak in hot water.
  • With dentures removed, clean and massage your gums.
  • If your toothbrush hurts your gums, run it under warm water or use a finger wrapped in a clean damp cloth.
  • If you have partial dentures, brush your natural teeth as usual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, dental bridges can restore a gap from one to three missing teeth. Dental implants are another option and can replace any number of missing teeth. While implants may require a higher initial investment and certain health requirements, they offer a durable solution.

With proper care, dentures can last between 5 to 10 years. However, wear and tear or changes in your mouth’s structure over time may necessitate a new set for a proper fit and comfort.

While you can wear dentures to bed, it’s generally recommended that you don’t. Removing them at night allows you to soak them for cleaning and gives your mouth, gums, and any remaining natural teeth a chance to rest.

Properly fitting dentures should feel secure. The top dentures should create a suction against your gums, while the bottom ones float just above your gums but stay in place. Partial dentures should align with your natural teeth without much movement, and implant-supported dentures should snap into place and remain stable. If you’re unsure about the fit, it’s best to book an appointment to have them checked and adjusted as needed.

Once you adjust to your dentures, you can enjoy most foods. However, hard or sticky foods like caramel, carrot sticks, or tough meats may cause discomfort or damage, and items with small particles, such as popcorn or seeded crackers, may lead to irritation. It’s best to enjoy these as occasional treats.
