All About Same-Day Crowns
A dental crown, or cap, is a custom cover that fits over a tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance. Crowns are often used for teeth damaged by decay, broken or misshapen, root canal-treated, or heavily stained. Designed to look and feel like a natural tooth, a crown restores both form and function.
With CEREC same-day crowns, there’s no need for traditional impressions or multiple visits. The crown is designed, crafted, and permanently bonded to your tooth in just one appointment—no temporary crowns required. Enjoy a quick, seamless solution for restoring your smile!
What Are the Advantages of Same-Day Crowns?
Before modern advancements, getting a crown required 2–3 appointments and often involved an uncomfortable temporary crown. Today, same-day crowns streamline the process, making it faster and more convenient.
- Here are the extra benefits of same-day crowns:
- No messy impressions: Enjoy a precise and comfortable digital 3D scan instead of traditional moulds.
- One-visit treatment: Your crown is designed, created, and placed in a single appointment.
- Less drilling: Modern techniques allow us to preserve more of your natural tooth structure.
Same-day crowns combine speed, comfort, and efficiency, making it easier than ever to restore your smile.
Same-Day Crown Treatment
Same-Day Crown Treatment
During your appointment, we will examine the tooth to determine if a crown is needed. If decay is present, we’ll remove the damaged areas and thoroughly clean the tooth. For teeth with stress fractures, a crown can protect against further damage. Once prepared, your tooth will be shaped to ensure the crown fits comfortably and securely.
Your crown custom made on site
After preparation, we use a 3D scanner to take a precise digital scan of your tooth, eliminating the need for messy impressions or trays. This scan is used to create a highly accurate digital model of your crown. With our in-house machine, your custom porcelain crown is crafted while you wait.
Placement and polish
Once your crown is ready, it will be bonded or cemented in place during the same visit—no temporary crown or follow-up appointment required. Your dentist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit and provide a final polish. You’ll leave with a beautiful, functional crown ready to go!

Frequently Asked Questions
Whether a crown is needed after a root canal depends on the tooth’s location. Molars and premolars, which handle the majority of chewing, typically require crowns for added strength. Front teeth like incisors and canines, which are not under as much pressure from chewing, may not always need crowns.
Crowns are more durable than fillings, especially on biting surfaces. Repeated chewing or clenching can cause fillings to chip or come loose, while crowns provide a solid, unbroken surface that can withstand greater force over a longer period.
Crowns are designed to restore tooth function and blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. They are coloured and contoured to match your aesthetics, often making it hard to distinguish the crown from your other teeth.
A dental post reinforces the base and core of a crown when there isn’t enough natural tooth remaining after a root canal. Unlike implants, posts are cemented into the prepared tooth structure to provide stability for the crown.
Getting a crown feels similar to having a filling. We numb the area to ensure the procedure is painless, though you may experience mild sensitivity or gum soreness afterward. If you’re anxious, let us know—we’ll work to make your visit as comfortable as possible.
Dental crowns typically last up to 15 years, but with proper care, they can last 25–30 years.
Care for your crown as you would a natural tooth—brush and floss regularly and visit your dentist for routine cleanings and checkups to keep the crown and surrounding gums healthy.
